Mr Beaver and Mr Bear
Mr Beaver and Mr Bear have been going home on the weekends with the students in my class. They write about their time visiting with the students and draw or post photos. One weekend Mr Bear came back to school with ski poles!!
Visiting with exchange group in Australind
Hairy looking stones we found on the beach in Australind came back to my classroom and became our writing for the day!! What are these?
School Happened
I was told by my wise younger son to update my blog so here goes Ty!! And it still gets hot but we seem to get a reprieve every once in awhile of cooler temperatures. I experienced my first thunder storm last week and loved it!! Lightning, thunder, torrential rain!!
It has been awhile since I posted anything to my blog about life here in Perth. As most of my teacher friends and family can imagine SCHOOL started. And so did the learning curve. School is large with 800 students, and covers a large property area in a beautiful area called Mindarie. I have 25 children in my class and have spent the last six weeks getting to know them and trying to learn the curriculum. Teachers at the school have been wonderful trying to help me find my way through the paper. There is a lot of paper!! I understand other teachers are also learning the new curriculum that is being implemented over the next few years. So I have been told not to feel alone as they are also learning as they go.
Getting used to the siren (bell), routines like backpacks being kept outside the classroom, icy pole Fridays, and parents spending first 15 minutes in your classroom helping their child get set up for the day are just a few of the new things I am adjusting to in my Australian experience.
Fun things are Jr Sports on Monday afternoon, Choir Practise every Friday in the staff room, and a Lattes being delivered for Friday recess break (my personal favourite).
Children are very curious about Canada and always asking questions, I am starting to have a collection of hand drawn Canadian flags, RCMP moose, and bears with Canadian flags on their tshirt. We are doing the assembly in three weeks and at this point I think it will be a Canadian compilation of songs, photos from home and even a story "Making the Moose out of Life". The song was a suggestion from MPS music teacher, thanks Leslie!!
I have been further south a few times now. Australind and Bunbury where we had a teacher exchange BBQ were lots of fun. It was nice to reconnect with the other teachers on exchange and hear about their first few weeks.
Went to Sculptures by the Sea - posted some of my favourites on Facebook. It was an amazing sight - all these interesting installations lined the Cottlesloe beach and area. My favourite was the Whaleshark with the setting sun lighting it up as the day came to a close.
Also took in my first outdoor cinema experience. Sitting under the stars watching Les Mis was very cool, even saw a few shooting stars as sideline entertainment. It all took part in Kings Park, this beautiful park in the middle of Perth, (reminds me of Stanley Park).
We have a five days off at Easter so I am trying to figure out where to go for a few days. Maybe Darwin or Alice Springs. Then Patti arrives end of April and we are off to Coral Springs and the Ningaloo Reef for a week of exploring. Should be fun!!
I still miss family and friends alot!! When those moments arise I drive myself on the wrong side of the road to the beach for either a walk in the sea while sipping a coffee or a bike ride along the path stopping to watch the kite surfers along the way. It helps abit :)
I will try to post some photos but internet can be very slow so will see how many I get up!!
